Remember All Behavior is Communication

As dementia progresses our brains become less efficient at communicating our needs and fears. As a result a person with dementia may exhibit a difficult behavior or act in a way that is hard to understand.

Possible Reasons for a Behavior

  • Is the person with dementia tired or overwhelmed?

  • Are they hungry or in pain?

  • Has the situation frightened them?

To cope with behavior challenges, it can be helpful to track these issues as they arise. It allows you to identify triggers and learn ways to cope or redirect behavior more effectively.

This can help determine the best time of day to schedule more challenging tasks, or clarify which interventions and responses are most effective.
