System for Categorizing Test Scores

Test results can some times seem confusing. To the extent we can, we make an effort to use test norms that consider the patient’s demographic features such as age, gender, and education.

Here is our system for categorizing test scores, based on the normal curve of functioning.

 

Severe Deficit:

3SD or more below the mean

 

Moderate Deficit:

2SD or more below the mean

 

Mild Deficit:

1SD or more below the mean

Low Average:

2/3SD or more below the mean

Average:

>2/3SD below the mean and

<2/3SD above the mean

High Average:

>2/3SD above the mean

Superior:

>1SD above the mean

Very Superior:

>2SD above the mean

 Exceptional:

>3SD above the mean
